Sunday afternoon: reading up and taking notes on New Space Opera from the book Science Fiction, New Space Opera, and Neoliberal Globalism: Nostalgia for Infinity by Jerome Winter (so happy I was able to get this one through interlibrary loan!)

Definitely finding it interesting reading so far, though I feel like at least as of the introduction it's a bit too unquestioning of the New Space Opera movement's claim that space opera was stale and irrelevant by the late 80s and in need of revitalization for my taste

The omission, based on the index a total omission, of Mary Gentle's Golden Witchbreed (1983) and Ancient Light (1987), is also surprising to me, because that duology seems like such a clear precursor to a lot of the themes and deconstruction that are central to New Space Opera

It's a movement of writers writing explicitly political space opera that deconstructs tropes from about the 80s through the 00s, including Iain M. Banks, Gwyneth Jones, Ken MacLeod, Alistair Reynolds and others! I may quote a bit if I can find anything short enough for a tweet :)
