I think it's similar to how therapists don't need to know every detail of your past, and in fact by taking it too seriously can reinforce or give too much weight to past limiting beliefs

In CBT, I think we call that a formulation. Behaviours are re-enforced by actions, feelings and thoughts. That's the first couple of sessions.
