I think we'll be at There Will Come Soft Rains level (hollowed out echoes of once-vital egregores) for a long time before we reach a Robots And Empire level (egregore-capable robots).

(And at that point, what are they but another vector of believed unreality? Treating positronic belief as philosophically different from neural beliefs is pretty chauvinistic.)

Indeed. The fundamental issues in this question emerged in the nominalism-realism debates of second scholasticism (17th C). Suarez's work imparted nominalism to the modern period; Poinsot's work contains an elaborate defense of culture as real (c.f. "customary signs").
