I think this experiment demonstrates the opposite of what the researchers think. If it takes this much curation effort in controlled conditions to drive convergence towards the center, it means the natural outcome is divergence, and centrism is untenable.

I suspect that they have the deeply confused implicit assumption that there's someone in charge that could fix the news / media / journalism, so they mistakenly see it as a tractable problem.

I think this shows polarization is an artifact of our election system. When I talk to conservative friends on the phone we find points of compromise despite our ideological differences. Sortition is about scaling up that kind of conversation between citizens.
