I haven’t been able to confirm this fully to my satisfaction but there appears to be a very strong correlation between joyless ideological axe-grinding and a highly instrumental kind of technological imagination (often genius grade).

These people are often very good at tech, but don’t seem to enjoy playing with it for its own sake. The work product is often either practical and instrumental but does not spark joy. It looks like they took pride in building it, but had no fun doing so. A means to social ends.

And think that correlation is further juxtaposed to a theoretical lack of passion which drives innovation. Short cuts weave it’s way into simplified inventions.
