On this one I’m personally very predictably an engineer. Every one of my ideas has started out as a technological premise. Then narrative structure, mood/aesthetics, and power/politics in that order.

BRB, gonna have to script a process to make enough sock accounts so I can answer for all the worlds I've imagined.

Imagined two competing galactic empires, both with their HQs on a divided Earth.

won't be surprised if technological premise is most common since we imagine variable futures and their moods shaped by variable technology. seems less common to assume mood influences tech

I think I dive into all my worlds from different angles. Usually, I just start building worlds around whatever thought was in my head at the time. I usually think about politics and narrative structure last though. Usually as I'm actually trying to write within the world.

Which one is "imagined a situation, made up a world it makes sense in, made up a history of how we got there from now"?

Narrative. Situations are like the differential equation you integrate to get a narrative.
