thinking about an alt world where really short video calls are a thing. it feels like we assume that a video chat must be relatively long and scheduled ahead of time. even if i’m in a lively back-and-forth in the DMs, i never try to convert it to a brief video convo.

i’m curious what a UI that encourages this behavior would look like — fluidly sliding between multiple mediums over the course of a convo, no expectation of a long drawn out call just because you’ve switched to video

Seems like the transaction cost of video requires a minimum length and complexity of information to be worth it. Only time 8ve done it is to check in on somebody who was emotionally upset and I wanted to see affect.

yeah, and people seem to have very different ideas about what the transaction costs actually are. everything from finding a quiet private space to wifi strength to social awkwardness to hair/makeup. a lot of stars have to align
