Have you ever set/pursued real life goals? Not joke ones or fakes you make up for a workshop exercise.
I haven’t. I’ve only:
a) picked among opportunities (50%)
b) stirred the pot to create new opportunities (30%)
c) allowed random play to snowball into bigger thing (20%)

And not script-template goals like “find a romantic partner” or “finish college” that basically everybody pursues. Real ones that, if pursued either successfully or not, would be your unique story.

I’m very suspicious of people who claim to be pursuing goals. Elon Musk is a rare example of someone who auditably declares and pursues goals in public.

I last circled this topic in 2015. Reconsidering my take then to see if maybe I should try goals for real for a change. breakingsmart.substack.com/p/life-without

I have set life goals. Also achieved them (some, anyway). Useful for planning how to get from Point A to Point B, BUT there is an insidious failure mode here where you are so focused on Point A -> Point B that you lose sight of the value of serendipity.

What's the difference between choosing among opportunities and pursuing a life goal? Aren't those the same thing?

I make a to-do list in Jan of every year :) Some of it is what I plan to accomplish, some is reach goals. I don’t know if that’s picking among opportunities.
