Having done it for a couple of months now, I realize why podcasting has exploded: modulo production tech, it's 10x easier for producers, even though it's much unfriendlier content form for consumers.

Is the reason it's easier that there are lower standards for the spoken word? I.e. would you be embarrassed to publish the transcript as an essay? Presumably, or the 10x difference in difficulty could be eliminated by dictating essays.

Yes. Even a moderately polished essay often has almost every sentence rethought/rewritten multiple times. The audio equivalent would be recording in multiple sentence-length takes with the script changing each time. A one-take podcast is like a first draft.

Except upon listening, audio first drafts don’t sound awful. That’s the inherent power of podcasts: they automatically bypass certain filter mechs.

Sure. That’s why I’m willing to post them as audio. When I start doing transcripts regularly, I’ll set low expectations.

@slatestarcodex claims that he writes his posts in one draft "pretty much writing what i think" and it takes him just up to one or two hours. Is he a unicorn?

Does this mean that podcasts are objectively worse than essays? It doesn’t feel that way to me (commuter who consumes ~8hrs of podcasts per week)

Just like some blogposts read like a one-take, I would love for more podcasts to heavily edit their raw captures.

Wouldn't have to be so much like @mastersofscale but I think this is why tech like this of @DescriptApp will be quite valuable. I.e. they have a case study of how naval and nivi used it for their super short podcast episodes

I only do one take podcasts... But I embrace hwo ugly and raw it sounds... Great way for me to practice public speaking even when I don't have time to go find a crowd.
