Having done it for a couple of months now, I realize why podcasting has exploded: modulo production tech, it's 10x easier for producers, even though it's much unfriendlier content form for consumers.

Disagree podcasts are unfriendly to consumers. It depends on the content. I listen to everything on 1.5x and aim for conversations/interviews/stories. It’s not great for every type of content, which is true for all media. It also has unique use cases (eg long driving, commute).

Across all types of content and consumers I think it is net worse than text. If I had to make an upfront veil of ignorance choice of medium before I knew what my idea and appropriate audience is going to be, I’d pick text.
Aural vs Textual are two very different cognitive modes of engaging the brain. Everything from speaker emotional content & pacing, to hemispheric differences in visual versus aural cognition, makes podcasts a fundamentally different thing than text.
