Having done it for a couple of months now, I realize why podcasting has exploded: modulo production tech, it's 10x easier for producers, even though it's much unfriendlier content form for consumers.

It’s just suited to different content. Maybe it’s less convenient for solo but if it’s interview/conversation based content, random access usually doesn’t make sense because topics often get mixed together and tangents happen.

Is it really less convenient for the consumer for something like The Joe Rogan Experience? Not really. That entire podcast is conversations that go into all sorts of directions. The podcast is really the most convenient medium for consumers in that case.

These are features, if you think about it. I can barely read one of your blog articles without getting distracted or bored - no offense intended, but that's the effect hypermedia has. Whereas dialog engages in a different way, tapping into social and conversational modes.

Audio is not trying to do what hypertext does. What you sacrifice in navigability, you gain in emotion and texture. It’s best suited for conversation and interview. Monolog is usually better as writing.

This is a great point and makes me think that there's a huge market opportunity for audio indexing technology.
