People take for granted that our knowledge of the future is based on models developed by observing the past.

You assume certain things from the past hold but others don’t, make a causal model, or do scenario analysis. Future = past should be the prior, but you can update from there.

Aren't there a group of people in Africa who give the future & past opposite directions to us? Past is in front because you can see it, future is behind because you can't , sort of thing.
