I find I’m generally suspicious of people who write primarily for lots of new media sites/blogs, with no strong personal blog. They are in the no-mans-land between staff writers at traditional media sites and bloggers. You can’t tell where they’re coming from or trying to go.

I don’t get the value, so I’m suspicious. You’re not building traditional media cred. You’re not building your own channel/asset. You’re not making money. So you’re either an idiot or up to something scammy/scummy. Especially if you can actually write decently.

You're on to something in identifying a coherent pattern -- I see lots of people like this too -- but a more generous interpretation would be that there are a lot of young people who are gatekeepered out of traditional media companies, have something to say, but not a thesis.
