Sigh. I’m going the other way. I’m trying to taboo the words epistemology and epistemic from my thinking/writing while people are so obsessed with it. It’s been an intellectual fidget spinner for the smart kids for a couple of years now. Stay away from ontological please.https://twitter.com/JeffLadish/status/1173033919375015937 …

    Jeffrey Ladish @JeffLadish
My new mantra is "epistemology, epistemology, epistemology". The most important question I can think of is: How do we know what is true?

I can see the value of tabooing the words. I have a specific meaning in mind. How do I reason about what will happen in the future (climate change, geopolitical outcomes, impacts of tech and social movements) well enough to craft good personal strategies

And how can I do this together with other people such that we can coordinate around making specific things happen in the world, i.e. reduce the risk of nuclear war

I come here for coinages like „intellectual fidget spinner“ and I’m a very satisfied customer.

Yes, Venkat is 10x better at amusing and quotable memes than Nicholas Taleb, but sadly doesn't get the attention he deserves.

Yes, but not 'social epistemology'. That's one of my interests. It's an important and neglected field.

Philosophy, like physics, breaks down at the edges. It will be impossible to go deep enough, or holistically enough to define things at either end. I personally think this is by design

There needs to be a more mediocre way of expressing the same idea.

That's a fun idea. We can say it differently and with more texture.

I'm sympathetic but not quite in agreement. Lesswrong-atics who use the word tend to be hyperindividualists with no idea that social epistemology is where the real promise lies. Academic epistemologists write too much that I call "Gettier cubed" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Gettier …

the problem might be that most of the people saying it never bothered learning anything about the discipline. it's kind of like flakes at TED talking about 'quantum' without bothering to learn any physics.
