The true enemy of effective mediocrity orientation is not excellence orientation but power hunger. The power hungry seek to control the excellence oriented for their own ends, and despise the mediocrity oriented for being a “bad influence” on them, tempting them to slack off.

The power hungry approach the excellent as fuel. Ignite them, use them up, burn them out, discard them. When the excellent dimly begin to sense what’s going on, the mediocre, with their disposability resistance and indefinite-survival gamesmanship, model a Plan B and exit option.
