A widely accepted model of collapse (Tainter) is that societies collapse when they get “too complex” in some sense. But this is an almost uselessly solipsistic tautology. How complex is too complex? Logs are interesting is that they are an external complexity signature.

This is a general problem with that class of theories. Maturana-Varela autopoiesis theory graced the same criticism. Valid, but not a reason to discard. More a reason to seek mitigation’s/workarounds.
Agreed. Which speaks in favour of the complexity involved in the formulation of such theories, as well. Complex enough to keep them on the table.
