“Most inflectional irregularities arise as a result of series of fairly uniform historical changes so forms that appear to be irregular from a synchronic point of view may be seen as following more regular patterns when the verbs are analyzed from a diachronic viewpoint.”

How does one determine something to be a irregular from a strict synchronic viewpoint? Lack of static beauty/elegance/harmony?

More like exceptions, corner cases. This is from the Wikipedia page on irregular verbs, which can be revealed to have regularities in a diachronic analysis that are not visible in synchronic.

I don't think you even need such fancy language.
Change is unexpected when you have a worldview that denies such change is possible.
Most people have restricted world views and so, are indeed surprised when the change happens.
Solution is more (genuine) history, less ideology.
