The whole German imperial experience on into Weimar is good enough example of a literate, media-consuming society siloing itself into antagonistic echo chambers that it seems reasonable to accept its paradigmatic status.

I’d say the comparison reveals more about Weimar than 2019, and if time travel were possible you’d probably have edge lords from today trying to go back to try and run their more advanced playbooks (and hindsight) in 1920s. History is lived forwards and understood backwards etc.
