It was a cheery, optimistic time’s idea of dark and ominous Seems almost campy now, in a Sontag failed-seriousness sense, but not quite. Just enough pathos to save it. Kinda like a kid’s idea of a scary tale. You want to laugh but you don’t because the kid is scared.

Let's not forget we had a plausible belief in governmental competence at the time, which made the possibility of vast conspiracies much more realistic

I used to really like reading about coverups, conspiracies, weird mysteries, stuff like that, just for fun. It's been six or seven years since I've been able to really get into it, and I've never been sure if it's because I'm getting older or things are just different.
