Been seeing the seeds of a similar trend in creative software. People pulling away from hyped/shiny stuff that barely conceals a shoddy/janky stack, favoring long-term projects with proven longevity.

Another thing I see is a return to postwar design/craft rigor (Rams, Bauhaus, etc) vs “design thinking” and IDEO-gestures

Iffy on this. Design thinking is a framework with which to design for an uncertain, ever-changing world (the new norm). I don’t see it going away.

it’s a fetishization of process as magical ritual that IME is largely used as CYA for lame ideas or to validate soft/creative work to stakeholders with too much power and no empathy/intuition

IME most processes were exactly that: magic rituals to smooth working relationships with powerful, arrogant and unempathic stakeholders. Each process worked for a couple of planning cycles before said stakeholders figured out how to ignore magic rituals without consequences

CYA for lames ideas = Essential culling/prioritization/baseline Proposals = Effective, oft-necessary means for establishing context & developing buy-in w/ stakeholders of varying personality types Strategy. Alignment. Communication. Diplomacy.

Engineering purists scoff at design thinking. Insecure designers w/ engineering envy over-emphasize it. It’s value is in establishing an informed baseline/North Star, getting buy-in, and knowing when my pivot. Nothing more, nothing less
