Wow, adding even the simplest sensor to a device seems to add a lot of $. Bonavita electric kettles? $38 without temperature, $66 with. https://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-BV382510V-Variable-Temperature-Gooseneck/dp/B005YR0F40/ref=asc_df_B005YR0F40/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167141308073&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=660086740122322596&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1013962&hvtargid=pla-275333816061&psc=1 …

IoT spillover helps, but steam whistle kettles went off patent like 125 yrs ago. Very specific example / solution though. More interested in adding fractional operation modes to HVAC. This thing where fans and compressors are binary is ridiculous.

Temperature sensor kettles are for off-boiling point though, for stiff like pour over coffee. My kettle has auto shutoff at boiling, so that’s a cheap feature. It’s monitoring/actuating sub-boiling temperatures that’s the desirable leading edge feature

The BIG problem, right now, is that everyone thinks they can be the center of the IoT universe. So do you speak Samsung's protocol, or Google's or Nest's or roll your own? 1/

Sanity is (too slowly) entering this space as one company after another (Lowes recently, Best Buy just this week, Ring+Blink as part of Amazon, Nest as part of Google) gives up or merges. But it's still too damn fragmented. 2/
