I get the sense the deeper you penetrate into elite circles, the harder it is to not become complicit in something ugly. To some extent elite cultures are almost defined by a kind of mutually assured destruction condition of collective complicity.

That's not my take. I think there's a sense, not just among elites, of how people are multi-dimensional and do good and bad things. The difference is that the bad can be used to attack elites in a way that it can't be used elsewhere.

I get that, but the difference between elites and others is not different in that respect. There are networks of complicity keeping the abusive chef in his job. It's just that he's not a target in the way elites are. No one will gain status from getting him fired.
