A good example of beats is maid-culture/housewife culture in developing world. About 30 years ago, this was relatively harmonious. It was a co-dependency within a power gradient where both sides were in a mutual complaint detente. Neither side seriously wanted to break it.

Post internet, with an empowered class of more entrepreneurial, and cellphone powered maids, who run on a faster tempo than older housewives of my mom’s generation, the detente has broke. The “beats” are predictable flare-ups, tempo-flexing (unpredictably not showing up) etc.

This is probably unsustainable and the informal organization of the maid sector will give way to something more like the American style maid economy, with apps like handy and digitally negotiated schedules and ratings over informal loose synchronization
