In military history there seems to be a pendulum swing between tactics organized around a focal-mass type unit versus a more fluid unit (chariot/elephant —> skirmishers —> phalanx —> light cavalry —> heavy cavalry —> ... tanks —> maneuver). Stock vs flow war? Any writing on this?

Basically a “stomp like elephant” vs “flow like water” dichotomy depending on the visibility, defensibility, speed, and maneuverability of the dominant type of unit shaping the gravity field of a battlefield basically. Modulo picking your battlefields to suit your capabilities.
