I think there’s an element of decisive estrangement in conspicuous consumption, in that it’s not sufficient to just buy expensive things, but to buy weird expensive things—to distinguish your “taste” from others, and disrupt an existing hierarchy

but i think the idea of spectacle and waste, like bataille talks about with “potlach”, are indispensable to either, which is why dollar amounts dominate the Discourse—like the contemporary art market, another amusing scam rich people play on each other
