Do doctors actually memorize hundreds of conditions and diseases like countries and capitals or something?

The body is a system so no, rationality and logical cause-effect (not memory) should be involved in every diagnosis.

Supposedly the terms and names you learn as a doctor are comparable to a new language

Oh interesting. That sounds about right and a better mental model than the dictionary/atlas I had in mind. Is that something you heard from doctor friends or read somewhere?

Yup. A good 50% of my dad’s time off from the hospital went into memorization routines. He’d make flashcards, audio notes, revise, listen in the car, listen while going to sleep. Lived and breathed that stuff.

I’d love to get my hands on a good deck of flash cards

Similarly to how an average chess player with a decent computer can beat a strong payer, how much better would a typical doctor perform if software-assisted?
