The AMA is a guild, medieval-style. They create barriers to entry to keep the supply of doctors low. The first of these is you have to be extremely good at rote memorization. They only get worse from there

I'm sure it's very similar to the process when I see a broken IIS server. What are the symptoms? Usually it's X, Y, or Z, let's rule those common issues out first. Nope... Okay, let's run some diagnostics. Oh, that aspect is like this other case I ran into a year ago... Google

I assume so - we do that sort of thing in biology too. Lots and lots of memorisation at the early levels, because you need the vocabulary, and at least a basic understanding of a wide range of topics, in order to tackle the more advanced material.
