It takes a lot more generative work, similar to reading regular books. Listen for those little blips where your brain tries to run off into a tangent of scene, plot, etc. and let it run.

Have you read Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics? I find that helps with a lot of folks who find parsing the page flow to be difficult/unenjoyable.

Yep, all 3 volumes. Plus a bunch of other such stuff. It's simply a question of practice. I read a bunch of simpler comics as a kid of course, but have only had time to indulge very little as an adult in the more modern stuff.
