Especially since I'm frequently mistaken for hispanic. In the liminal space between the take and the double take, which can last minutes, I sort of manage to fake-participate in that world.

I didn't feel that in LA. Have strongly felt that in Miami. Even in Houston, knowing Spanish is a strong advantage on many fronts - culinary, finding help amongst others.

Might be a function of neighborhood. I live downtown where the hispanic vibe is strong.

If that's your ONLY take, you haven't explored enough LA! There is a huge Chinese LA you need to visit. Alhambra, Arcadia, Rowland Heights, Diamond Bar...
