Of course sci-fi reflects the era in which it is created. Every step away from reality (sometimes called the novum) takes more narrative time to explain and even expense to realize.

One angle would be to find specific terms for different eras, some of which I need to refresh my own memory of - ex. my understanding was expanded when I learned of “blobject” as a term for late 90s/some early 00s design, & learned about tech which enabled those designs to happen

Part of the problem of understanding those topics involves the history of industrial design being less codified & established (vs. say architecture) due to it being a young field. AFAIK you sometimes have to hunt for the history. (Which reminds me that I should learn more of it.)
