Shakespeare is one thing I don't think I could read by myself. Only reason I know Macbeth and Julius Caesar well enough to both grok and quote from is that they were assigned for high school and we spent like a year on each with a teacher. One of the better investments of school.

I'm lucky enough to live near the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (one of the best in North America) and can see plays live. I think that's the best way to experience Shakespeare - I can read the plays, but prefer live performance as the first way to experience them.

I don't think I could parse/translate elizabethan fast enough to appreciate the language even though I know most of the basic stories (from Lamb's tales versions)

Have you ever gone to a play to check? Good actors can make a lot of things understandable, even when the words are going by fast. Stratford has filmed some of their productions, so they are available to watch with a remote control to pause or rewatch
