Flow containers that signal more elan vital capacity than is actually flowing through them. That’s why “spaced out and disconnected” are good descriptions of the subjective state and why the paintings feel empty.

That said, I _think_ I know what you mean -certain Dalís and Magrittes spring to mind- but find it impossible to apply across the surrealist painting board.

No this too. It evokes emptiness in my sense. It’s not about visual fullness. It’s about the conceptual space delineated.
