Fiat news, for all its present immaturity, is the future. We might as well get good at it. Investigative journalism is the gold standard in the full problematic sense of the term. A news production/consumption posture driven by nostalgia for IJ is like being a gold bug.

I did a future-of-newspapers project back in 2009 at Xerox as part of which I talked to people at Pro Publica, CPI, Knight, practicing journalists etc. The universal refrain was “woe is us, investigative journalism is dying.” Me now: Give it a decent funeral and move on.
