You know what part of old media *does* still sorta work and embodies the essence of progressivism without virtue signaling? No it isn’t investigative journalism. It’s mass entertainment. Scripted television and movies that are NOT reboots or revivals in particular.

All reboots and franchise extensions are virtue signals (moving to a new medium, like comics —> movies is generally not). But when TV/movies seem “fresh”, it’s a sign of progressivism working. Subverting entrenched traditional virtues over signaling.

It is no surprise that even when media empires are owned conservatives, they are forced to turn to progressives to produce watchable stuff. Most traditionalist fiction fails. But even mediocre, tropey progressive fiction with some modest subversion can get popular.

The rare conservative storytellers in tv/movies who make it work, like Clint Eastwood, have narrow range and appeal, and have to overcompensate with craft for shortcomings in progressive narrative dna.

A real danger signal that Hollywood is succumbing to the same forces that drive virtue signaling in news and social media is... reboots. Explicit heavy-handed wokification is not as much of a problem because it fails in the market. But resorting to the nth reboot... yeah, danger.
