Fear of inbox zero is fear of the void. What if, once you've cleared decks, there is nothing? Usually when you get to zero, it immediately catalyzes a generative burst of stimulating thoughts, but it's not guaranteed. You may have to spend minutes to months at zero.

I have inbox zero. In my case there truly is nothing and you become a spectator to the games people play (e.g., on twitter). I have also realized that truly stimulating and original thoughts cannot occur in isolation - inbox zero is a well-founded fear.

I find that if I have had background thoughts simmering that lack structure and explicit recognition, they bubble right up when I get to zero and usually I have a very productive brainstorm session soon after. But sometimes... nothing for weeks but an exhausting inner silence.
