Most living things seem most alive when they use surplus energy to play. Non-living things and egregores are hardest to anthropomorphize when they exhibit no behaviors that can be interpreted as play.

Things that seem to reflect absurd priorities or idiosyncratic desires that do not follow from utilitarian concerns and seem like burning off energy

No that's just absurd with respect to the utilitarian logic of humans. That sort of thing is usually functional with respect to organizational self-perpetuation. A good example may be whatever process at Apple led to the puck mouse, beyond Jobs' individual idiosyncrasies.
