I'm happy paying for nothing - as I think Heinlein said, following the news is a dirty habit not to be done in public. But when I do want a general news source, I use http://lite.cnn.io (It's a text-only version of CNN.)

The Economist

The Economist has an advantage in being a weekly publication – that helps them filter out a lot of the day-to-day noise and attempt to focus on stories that might be relevant on a longer cycle.

I've been told by some very bright people I respect to get out of the daily news cycle. I really like The Economist as a nice weekly summary. FT was good, but like you said, it has a financial focus. The Scotsman is supposed to be good. I do still subscribe to the NYT.
