It’s been expertly marketed as “healthy” because the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published studies on how replacing soybean and canola oils (long chain triglycerides) with coconut oil (medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs) can help you lose weight.

There are others like how lauric (fatty) acid kills bacteria, which may explain why it is very good topically on burns, and even as a moisturizer when used in small doses. However, it is extremely high in saturated fat, even more than avocado. I’ve gained weight as a consequence.

I use it 50/50 with bacon fat for stovetop popcorn and it’s very good.

The latest is that popular dietary advice is still bad. (My provisional guess is that coconut oil is better than more saturated oils and probably better than most polyunsaturated oils, but not as good as fish oil. And it's concentrated fat, inferior to a whole food.)
