I agree about it not being complex - at least complexity isn't what makes it hard to automate. I was tempted to compare to your Ceiling Fan Problem but don't think it's that either. More like sales, the interpersonal empathy is fundamental to the job

My point is, functions are never automated by teaching machines how to do it like humans but refactoring the job so it is doable by machines. So the complexity is moot.

Robot welders don’t weld like humans. Driverless cars drive differently than humans. Machine learning driven marketing spam works on different principles than human sales people...

Certainly. And then that refactoring process pushes humans into roles that are orthogonal to what's newly automated, the residual tasks needed to ensure the new process runs smoothly

Yeah and sometimes the residual is zero. Telephone operators are basically gone for example.
