Do you ever disagree with something and have it unlock a whole line of reasoning you hadn't thought of before, and then not want to repeat it publicly because it seems like a rude way to treat something that was so generative?

It’s rude NOT to. Wouldn’t you want to hear that kind of flattering tear down of your ideas? So long as it wasn’t unpleasantly beefy?

yeah I think you can do it in a respectful way but it’s hard to see past “you’re wrong!”
