Thought: recovery is more about restoring order than energy. What is truly exhausting is not energy expenditure but entropy increase. Structured expenditure of energy, like a run or gym session are actually restorative overall, and locally (muscles) quick recovery.

In addition to recovery, optimal training looks a lot like mediocre performance. There are either a bunch of interesting connections to make here, or I'm simply mapping to one of my few modes of thinking readily available.

Poor comparison. If only choosing one, intensity is better and has a lower burnout risk. Optimal is actually more like alpinism training where base of 'easy' training is combined with small amount of well-timed peaking... hmm, proper endurance training ~= @vgr's mediocrity theory

Chinese weightlifting team will play a light game of basketball or table tennis or jog on their 'day off'. Ilya Ilyin took 6 months off after winning the Olympics, just swimming and other light workouts. Won World's 11 months later
