For a house GoGoGate removes fear you left garage door open. BoxLock deals w/ porch thieves.
For garden Rachio is v nice.

I consider Eve IOT products to be 1st choice if they have what you want. Least hassle, most reliable. Worth the extra 30% or so.
Smart plugs & motion detectors allow for lights that come on, switch off, to my convenience.

I’ve found it’s worth buying one smart plug and just playing with it. Once you try a few things, you figure out a real use and your mind clicks “THAT’s what it’s good for”.
Every few months I spend ~$100 on experimental IoT kit, and IMHO the value of the wins justifies it.
