Lately I’ve had this odd sense that people take me both less seriously and more seriously than they did 5-6 years ago. I like it. Kinda liberating.

More serious = form of reach/influence
Less serious = content of shit I say
More klout, less clout 😆

Easier to be direct without causing offense for one. Beyond about 20k followers you turn into some sort of cartoon apparently. Things you say get passed through a cartoonizing filter. Unconscious heuristic: “No signal that 20k+ people are paying attention to can have much alpha”

I think I understand now why so many bluechecks adopt a posture of preternatural poise and high gravitas and seem to lose any sense of humor they might have displayed at say 1k. One part Poe’s law defenses, two parts cartoon affect counterprogramming.

Yoda Voice: Choose between gravitas and cartoonishness, you must, when pass 20k followers, you do.
I choose increasing cartoonishness. If I ever cross a million, I’ll only tweet cartoon noises

I’ve noticed myself on the opposite side of that cartoonish feeling. I wonder to what extent the profile photo being ambiguous plays a part in that

I don’t understand. What do you mean? I seem more cartoonish to you or you feel less cartoonish yourself?

I'm looking forward to that. As Twitter is amplifying the annoying parts of my personality (true for most of us) I so wish people would start taking me less seriously. I only came here to broadcast my research papers, and then I got sucked into...whatever goes on on this website.
