main takeaway from DC’s museum of the bible: secular liberals underestimate how much conservative ideology and foreign policy is informed by centuries-old religious conflict where atheists see a battle between nation states, many modern christians see a war for eternity

for a lot of conservative Christians, America is a small but important chapter in an epic story that literally stretches back to the beginning of time from their perspective, presidents help fulfill prophecies that were made thousands of years agohttps://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/magazine/faith-certainty-and-the-presidency-of-george-w-bush.html …

i’m not convinced that progressives can compete in this contest of narratives without a similarly deep story about where we came from and where we’re going

basically every generation of Christians since the 1st century thought they were witnessing the apocalypse the book of Revelation is like a horoscope in that it’s both vague enough and specific enough to apply to whatever context you find yourself in https://twitter.com/_molten_steel_/status/924319998188732416?s=21 …

Hmm. I think you’re making a basic error here of overfitting the vocal, aging minority. This stuff has been in steady decline since the 60s. Even the far right is mostly not actually religious, it just has a religion-derived identity.

tbf you said "basically every generation of Christians"— it's just that Christians are diminishing as a percentage of society. Because this is still very true today, plenty of people in my orbit.
