Invention proper requires making up an exhausting amount of novel detail. Think of a late model steam engine from say the 1930s. Hugely complicated machine with hundreds of parts, all with names/designs someone had to make up that didn’t exist in 1730r. Complexity from simplicity

True of all creative work. People talk about it as “big insight” plus “craft” as separate, temperamentally opposes, skills. But, in my experience, it’s much more a marathon of coming up with good ideas at each fractal scale of a project. Craft is just conditioning for this race.
