Characters in contemporary pop storytelling seem to be getting less real and more archetypal. As in, they embody an idea (eg. Rick Sanchez = nihilist god) rather than an individual coherent person who is just interesting (eg. Cosmo Kramer).

I thought it was just me but I can’t think of a truly compelling “character” (signifying nothing but their own being) like Kramer in the last 20y. They’ve all been walking ideas, signifying some bigger social dynamic, even when good.

Larry David *is* George, and a foil to Kramer. George is constantly trying his hardest for a win while Kramer stumblesfrom victory to victory even when he makes no effort.
