Characters in contemporary pop storytelling seem to be getting less real and more archetypal. As in, they embody an idea (eg. Rick Sanchez = nihilist god) rather than an individual coherent person who is just interesting (eg. Cosmo Kramer).

This is not true of just the last 20 years. It is the nature of fictional characters throughout history. And I could even argue that Kramer is an archetype. Someone like him could not really step out of the screen and live in real life.

Is that because of the characters... or because you've built up a library of ideas that allows you to slot everybody into archetypes? i.e. it's you that's changed.
