Maybe this is projection, summer heat and exhaustion talking but LA seems somehow lower energy and higher dissipation than any other major city. Like the idea of “city” strolled to the SW corner of the continent and kinda just loosened its belt and sank exhausted into a recliner

And yet not only do a huge number of people live here, but there's a "feeling" to LA that, as vgr said, is understood world-wide - and as soon as you arrive in LA so much, from the palm trees to the San Gabriels, looks familiar Almost as though your definition of city is lacking.

Well of course Gertrude Stein recommends you visit Oakland... I will agree that LA is perhaps more difficult to "do" as a TOURIST than any other city I can think of in its league. It's not obvious where to stay, where to go, how to enjoy a week and get a feel.

It works SO MUCH better if you have a local you can stay with who knows where to go and what's fun. (Not in the stupid "this is a great hole in the wall eatery" way that irritates the fsck out of me, but even to have a great tourist experience.)
