Ignoring city size and landmarks etc SF has an Amsterdam vibe and NYC a Rotterdam vibe. Haven’t been to Portland but seems like an Utrecht vibe. Los Angeles feels like The Hague / Scheveningen. LA is my favorite city

Can you explain the differences between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague you are getting at with the comparison?

As a native, I’d argue that we’re still a ranch/cowboy town at heart but with an ego that wants everyone to know about us (broadcasting entertainment). Our city’s collective ambition is for people we don’t know to know of us even if we don’t know them.

Stronger overall (but more diffuse) than New York even. Can’t put my finger on it. New York is sort of self-consciously trying to be some superego-based “classic” version of itself like European cities. This is all id.
