In another 10-20 years the same people will have to condemn themselves for their current opinions not being progressive enough, unless their religion creates room for redemption or forgiveness.

I think the op would say that’s a good thing and that’s how you track your own moral growth

to be clear(er), I’d walk this back from condemning the people as individuals, woke hysterics is not particularly useful if your goal is some kind of “measurable” moral progress nor do I really think it has to be as strong as a condemnation per se

but the thing i want to be clear about is that i reject pinker’s frame that criticizing normativity of a particular time is out of scope. you’d have to first define what you mean by moral progress for me to even be on the same page with you

There's also a third stance that neither black flag or Pinker is taking: we can admire the contributions of people who are tragically flawed, past (with moral hindsight) or present.

Clearly anyone who is/was not a vegan has no moral or artistic authority and should be ignored. That's the obvious trend today. More controversial: will be in 100 yrs that anyone who had more than two kids was clearly an irresponsible hedonist, also to be ignored.
