Binges train you up to binges. Normalizing always follows the lapse.

Spikier is better, you get a sort of bulk discount

So true. 200cals a day is how you gain 5lbs without noticing. Unlike 1400, you don't "feel" the next day like you've done anything wrong, so it's too easy to continue. (I have maybe too much insight into this - tracked every calorie I ate for about 4 years straight)

There is risk of reward circuit downregulation of dopamine receptors with bigger or more frequent binges. Some people are genetically predisposed but can happen to anyone. Bingeing on food/alcohol/drugs best avoided if possible.

It'll depend a lot on the dynamics of the underlying system. Per your example, given equal food, 1400 once is effectively fewer calories. 200 everyday means that diet plus 200 is your actual diet.

If you want to gain weight 200 if you need an out, binge. Though, without social pressure, many don't halt the day after. I like to reserve mine for random friend dinners and holidays. A body accustomed to 2k Cal isn't gonna effectively manage 7k 1day dump.
